Putin grants citizenship to foreign recruits

Editorial

No new mobilization, the Russian president Vladimir Putin signed a decree regarding the assignment of citizenship to foreigners who sign a contract to serve in the Armed Forces. Next March's elections give Putin no other choice. This measure adds to the previous pardon granted to prisoners sent to the front, highlighting the commitment to filling the shortage of recruits. The same problem also arises in Kyiv, where it is facing the challenge of sending military personnel to the front.

Meanwhile, the White House confirmed the Wall Street Journal's reports, saying that Moscow is planning to purchase short-range ballistic missiles from Iran. Such a move could enhance Russia's ability to strike Ukraine's infrastructure and simultaneously limit the effectiveness of its air defense via Patriot missile systems.

Kyiv intelligence has announced a Russian cyber attack on the main Ukrainian telephone company, Kyivstar. This destructive attack, ongoing since at least May of the previous year, was meant to serve as a major warning to the West and caused disruptions in services provided by Ukraine's largest operator, affecting around 24 million users for several days. The infiltration involved thousands of servers and virtual PCs, causing the complete destruction of the telecommunications operator's operational core, although it did not have a significant impact on the military communications systems that often use the Misk Startlink network.

At a diplomatic level, the statements of the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, have aroused much interest: he declared that Ukraine is willing to collaborate with Donald Trump, should he become the next president of the United States, thus trying to allay concerns internal and external. Meanwhile, the 2024 relief package remains stalled in the US Congress. Kuleba also highlighted President Trump's role in supplying weapons to Ukraine, specifically Javelin missiles. Finally, President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to Italy during a phone call with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
