Qatar approaches Iran

Qatar has announced the resumption of full diplomatic relations with Iran, thus going in the opposite direction to the request of the Gulf countries that asked Doha to degrade relations with Tehran. In announcing its decision, Qatar did not mention the diplomatic crisis underway since June 5 with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, the first countries to interrupt diplomatic and commercial relations with Doha, accused of supporting extremism. The Doha Foreign Ministry has instead announced that the Qatari ambassador will soon return to Tehran. Qatar has not had its own ambassador in Tehran since the beginning of 2016, after having withdrawn him as a sign of solidarity in Riyadh for the attacks suffered by two Saudi diplomatic offices in Iran after the execution of a Shiite religious leader by the authority of Saudi Arabia. "The State of Qatar intends to strengthen bilateral relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran in all fields," explains a brief statement from the Foreign Ministry.
