Ultra-fast networks, Aidr: government-FS agreement important for digitization of the country

Mauro Nicastri: infrastructures will allow greater capillarity of the digital transition

Promote the diffusion of new generation networks throughout the country, thanks to the capillarity of the railway infrastructure. This is the objective of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Ferrovie delo Stato, Luigi Ferraris, by the Undersecretary of the Prime Minister with responsibility for technological innovation, Alessio Butti, by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, and by the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso. The three-year project uses co-financing up to a maximum total value of 550 million euros and provides for the construction of fiber optic backhauling and a publicly owned 5G mobile radio infrastructure, with priority along the sections at high speed.

“As the CEO of Ferrrovie, Luigi Ferraris underlined on the occasion of the presentation of the agreement – declares the president of the Aidr Foundation, Mauro Nicastri –, the project will make it possible to bring the optical fiber to areas that are currently poorly or not covered at all, thus improving connectivity, promoting multiple digitization processes for the benefit not only of travellers, but also of businesses and citizens. The investment in new infrastructures – continues Nicastri – is an important element in the process of digital transition, to which our country is called, at the instigation of the European Union, in the European Year of Skills. In this direction, we are promoting a program dedicated to school groups and employees of the Public Administration and businesses, in collaboration with the European Parliament and Commission, aimed at promoting digital culture, to overcome the existing gap, allowing an increasingly large number of exploiting the enormous potential linked to the use of digital technologies”.
