Reconstruction of Tripoli Airport: "Italy beware of the Turks"

A Turkish company paid a visit to Tripoli International Airport, the destroyed airport whose reconstruction was entrusted to the Italian consortium "Aeneas".

The news of the arrival of the Turks was reported by the Italian agency Nova. An "inspection" was carried out by an "ad hoc" commission appointed by the Ministry of Transport of the Government of the Libyan National Agreement (GNA) of Tripoli for the assessment of the damage suffered by the recent armed conflict to public transport infrastructures.

The inspectors were welcomed by the director of the international airport, by the directors of the technical offices of the airport and by those responsible for protecting the airport. The interior of the airport, some buildings, but also the equipment and systems present were inspected to understand if they are reusable or not to carry out some projects already contracted and complementary to the passenger terminal project.

In addition, the possibility of "cancel some of the contracts stipulated and create new works". The final goal, assures the Libyan Airport Authority, is to "make the airport ready for operation once the construction of the previously contracted passenger terminal project has been completed ".

Tripoli International Airport is a strategic infrastructure, it was at the center of the clash between the militias of two city-states, Misurata on one side and Zintan on the other.

The Libyan Ministry of Transport has started the reconstruction of the Tripoli airport by entrusting the works to the Italian consortium "Aeneas".

"Our ambition is to have this airport and other airports in Libya as a transit terminal to Africa and Europe and as a hub for tourism“, Said Fayez al Sarraj.

The project for the reconstruction of Tripoli airport is a project worth a total of 79 million euros and involves the construction of two terminals. One national and one international, complete with all airport facilities to allow the opening of this airport. Both terminals, according to the project, cover a total of about 30 thousand square meters, with a potential of about six million passengers per year.

The works, which will last about ten months, will make it possible to manage the arrival and departure of 6 million passengers a year.

The Italian consortium, Turks permitting, should make the expertise and materials available to the Libyans, leaving the labor to the Libyans.
