Russia: National Day celebrations across the country

The Day of Russian National Unity was established following the amendment of article 1 of the federal law on the days of military honor of Russia of December 24, 2004. The new day of national holiday, as noted by the news agency “Sputnik ", Approved by the initiative of the Religious Council of Russia, was celebrated for the first time on November 4, 2005. The day was established to commemorate the liberation of Moscow, led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, from the Polish occupation in November of 1612. From the historical point of view this event is linked to the end of the so-called period of troubles, determined by strong instability and unitary crisis due to the end of the Rurik dynasty in the 17th. National Unity Day is not a new holiday but an ancient tradition linked to the recently reintroduced Orthodox Church. Throughout the day, Russian political parties and movements will hold demonstrations, marches, concerts and social events across the country. The popularity of this holiday grows every year. According to a recent survey by the Vtsiom research institute, 79 percent of the sample among Russian citizens believe it to be an important celebration, Nova reports.
