Safety in tunnels and viaducts

From MIT a law for homogeneous rules and a circular for innovative controls

A law to ensure the homogeneity of risk classification and management, safety assessment and monitoring of existing viaducts and tunnels along the entire road and motorway network: through specific guidelines, with the opinion of the Superior Council of Public Works and in concert with the Regions, Provinces and Municipalities for the galleries and viaducts owned by these entities.

This is the norm in the Simplification Decree approved by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Paola De Micheli, to define a framework of certain technical rules valid for all managers throughout the national territory.

In addition, through a special circular issued today, the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport has introduced, pending the application of the new law, the possibility of innovative investigation methods in tunnels, while the existing obligations for dealers on safety remain unchanged.

The immediate adoption of the new inspection systems will facilitate the acceleration of the audit plan underway along the Ligurian motorway network, better defining the tools that can be adopted and the data to be acquired.

The new supplementary circular with respect to that of 1967 currently in force allows for example to make use of geo-radar monitoring for inspection in tunnels and introduces a shared management of emergencies thanks to memoranda of understanding and permanent tables at the Prefectures with all interlocutors, institutional and operational in the area concerned.
