Syria: Loyalist forces advance in the Ghouta

Eight years have passed since the beginning of the bloody conflict in Syria that began in March 2011 when the first protests against Bashar al-Assad broke out in the Arab country.

Syrian troops and their allies continue to advance in the eastern Ghouta, particularly marked by air raids and artillery. Loyalists, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, have managed in the last hours to advance in the strategic location of Hamouriyeh, in the south of eastern Ghouta, and would have managed to take control of some areas.

The forces of Damascus, supported by the Russian allies, have launched the 18 last February an offensive to regain control of the eastern Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus in the hands of the rebels. The offensive actually caused a breakdown of the territory (the area around Hamouriyeh would be in the hands of the Faylaq al-Rahman fighters).

According to activists in Hamouriyeh, about five thousand civilians would be trapped. Some would have tried to escape. "We do not know what it is about who tried to escape," said activist Youssef Bustany, quoted by DPA.

According to Siraj Mahmoud, a volunteer for the white helmets said: "No one can enter the city to rescue women and children and those who have been under the rubble because of the bombings".

According to the Observatory, at least 1.220 civilians were killed due to attacks by the forces of Damascus and the Russian allies from the 18 last February. Yesterday, the Syrian official media and the Observatory reported a second group of civilians who were transferred outside the Eastern Ghouta via a "safe corridor" at the al-Wafidin crossing.
