NATO is ready to recognize Space as a new war environment

According to Reuters, NATO officials will designate space as a defense priority by the end of 2019.

The decision formally recognizes the possibility of a war in space, in addition to existing conflicts that are already recognized in the air, on land, on the seas and in cyberspace.

According to Reuters, the decision is scheduled for the NATO summit in December, which President Trump is expected to attend. The move is seen, in part, as a response to Trump's authorization of a "Space Force," as well as a way to show the US president that the alliance may still be relevant.

"There is agreement that we should make space a domain and the London summit is the best place to make it official," said a senior NATO diplomat at the press service.

Another former NATO officer agreed with the decision, saying space would soon become a priority over other areas of traditional military dominance.

"You can have war exclusively in space, but whoever controls the space also controls what happens on land, at sea and in the air," said Jamie Shea, an official of the Friends of Europe association in Brussels.

"If you don't control space, you don't even check other domains," Shea told Reuters.

The American Congress is ready to create a new US military division dedicated to space, in line with Trump's overall goal for a Space Force.

A section devoted to the creation of a Space Corps - which is the name for the service the chamber originally approved in 2017 - is included in the House's annual defense policy law. The Senate version of the Defense Authorization Act , meanwhile, clearly spelled the creation of a Space Force in the text.

The two versions of the bill will have to be brought together before the final step, but the inclusion of a space military branch in both American legislative branches guarantees its creation.
