Sweden: new arrest for technological espionage

The Swedish prosecutor's office in Stockholm confirmed the news, reported by media reports, of the second arrest for espionage. The arrest took place after a man was arrested in the Swedish capital on Tuesday, presumably also charged with espionage for Russia.

As reported by intelNews, a man was stopped last Tuesday during a meeting with a foreign diplomat in central Stockholm. The diplomat is presumably a staff member of the Russian embassy in Sweden. It is believed to be an official of the Russian secret services operating under official cover. A representative of the Swedish Security Service, known as SÄPO, later declared that the man, who was meeting the Russian diplomat, had been recruited by the Russian secret services in the 2017 or before, and had regular contact with his Russian leaders . His name was not revealed to the media, but he is believed to be working for an unnamed technology company in Sweden.

Last Thursday, the Stockholm daily Dagens Nyheter announced that he had seen court documents concerning the involvement of a second person for the crime of espionage for a foreign power.

Hans-Jorgen Hanstrom, from the prosecutor's office, confirmed the arrest by adding that the main suspect was accused of espionage against Swedish interests for a foreign power. Hanstrom explained that the suspect was engaged in espionage activity from the 10 April to the 30 September 2018 without disclosing the name or nationality of the arrested person.

The news of the arrest was confirmed by Karl Melin, spokesman for SÄPO, but did not confirm the existence of a connection with the first arrest last Tuesday.
