Taiwan: the new frontier of Asian containment

(by Pasquale PREZIOSA) President Trump accepted, on the first day of the inauguration, a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen.

The last official contact with the Taipei authorities from the United States came back to the 1979.

From the beginning, the change in strategy in Trump's international policy towards China was evident.

The new American administration did not want to assume that Taiwan is a Chinese province to be politically connected to the continent.

The US president continues to test Chinese policy, trade relations between the two countries, investigations into the import of aluminum from China and raise security relations with Taiwan.

In the wake of the US, Japan recently concluded an agreement, though not exhaustive, with Taiwan for the Okinotori atoll, to recognize the exclusive economic zone of 200 miles around the atoll.

The MoU signed last December 20, immediately pointed out the Beijing protest, which has strategic interests throughout the area, from fishing to air defense.

The signed agreement will also have an impact on Chinese claims for control of the East China Sea and for the Diaoyu / Senkaku archipelago, annexed to Japan in 1895 and not returned to Taiwan in 1972, China believes that the archipelago belonged to Taiwan when this was a Chinese province.

The new relations between Japan and Taiwan should be seen in light of the new policy desired by the President of Taiwan, the constant Chinese pressure on Taiwan deemed unjust, the formation of a new block for the containment of China made up of India, Japan, Australia and the United States US.

The exploitation of the natural resources of the oceans and the fishing rights are at the basis of today's disputes between the countries of the area concerned, the possible solution of the dispute will involve very long (Asian) negotiation times.
