Tel Aviv says no to Washington, the war in Gaza continues

Editorial

The United States is trying to mitigate the devastating impacts of Israeli military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, hoping for the end of the most intense phase of the conflict by the end of the year. However, they are faced with the determination of an ally, Benjamin Netanyahu, who is more determined than ever to intensify the attacks and continue without giving in to international pressure.

Jake sullivan, US National Security Advisor, returned to Israel to apply pressure to minimize the collateral damage of the attacks and to insist on the need to end the acute phase of the conflict: dead line, December 31, 2023. The United States proposes more limited, surgical operations to eliminate Hamas leaders. Israel remains vague on American intentions.

The news of the arrest of seven alleged Hamas members in Germany, Holland and Denmark, accused of planning attacks against targets of the Jewish diaspora but perhaps also Catholics, strengthens Tel Aviv in its hard line, that of fighting Hamas terrorism and the opponents of Jewish world, everywhere.

Netanyahu, after the meeting with Sullivan, reaffirms his determination to continue the war until final victory, underlining that it will take several months to achieve the goal of destroying Hamas. Tel Aviv's firm position, however, adds another internal problem for Biden who must face opposition from Republicans in Congress who want an American disengagement in the supply of weapons in both the war in Ukraine and in the Middle East.

Tensions between the United States and Israel are accentuated by fundamental disagreement over the two-state solution, with the United States supporting the involvement of the Palestinian Authority led by Abu Mazen, while the Israeli government is firmly opposed to the historic and deemed outdated solution of the two states. Meanwhile, the UN denounces the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, with millions of displaced people and a growing shortage of food and epidemics.
