4.0 earthquake at the Campi Flegrei, felt as far as Naples

A strong earthquake of 4.0 magnitude yesterday evening, at 22.08pm, shook the Campi Flegrei and was also felt in Naples, where people poured into the streets.

The epicenter at Campi Flegrei was detected at a depth of 3km. The earthquake caused rubble to fall in the epicenter area. Panic engulfed people who took to the streets and then delayed returning to their homes.

Yesterday in the Region a meeting was held on the seismic events that are affecting the Campi Flegrei area to take stock of the situation on the existing plans, in reference to transport and healthcare.

"It was a superficial earthquake, people felt it well especially in the Agnano area, closest to the epicentre. We also expect other events, but beyond some fallen rubble, at present there does not appear to be any significant damage to the structures". This is the first examination by the director of the Vesuvian Observatory, Mauro Di Vito, who spoke to the microphones of Canale 21.

"Seismic activity continues and will continue. On this – explains Di Vito – no doubt. Land uplift will continue. The defenses to adopt consist of the correct behaviors to adopt. We need to manage fear and carry out all the necessary checks on the buildings. Earthquakes - he concluded - they are not predictable but I can assure you that everything is being done to mitigate the effects of the earthquake."
