Diabetes, new techniques for blood glucose monitoring

In Tuscany, innovative technologies for the continuous monitoring of blood sugar. On the occasion of the 2017 World Diabetes Day, the Region announces that it will make them available to patients who will be eligible, among the more than 172.000 people with diabetes present in Tuscany. Glycemic self-control - experts say - is essential for the management of diabetes and to prevent hypoglycemic events, the leading cause of hospitalization in diabetics. Glycemic self-control is a practice that must necessarily be repeated several times throughout the day (especially for Type 1 diabetes) and in most cases it takes place through acupuncture and the relative dosage of capillary blood sugar. Today this procedure is favored by the arrival of new technologies that can make these operations easier, discreet, quick and simple in everyday life, obviating or significantly reducing acupuncture. Recently, technological innovations have been developed that can drastically reduce the need for the practice of glycemic self-control through multi-day acupuncture. In Tuscany, a pilot project was developed for the controlled introduction of the first “implantable” sensor for continuous blood glucose monitoring (Eversense CGM system - Roche Diabetes Care). The beneficiaries will be 30 adult patients with Type 1 diabetes (15 in multi-injection insulin therapy and 15 with insulin pumps), who will be followed in accredited diabetes centers to carry out the implant in the three large areas. The project, commissioned by the Tuscany Region, is developed in collaboration with Roche Diabetes Care (company that owns the device), which will provide 6 transmitters and 30 sensors free of charge for 60 months, providing tutors for the training of clinics in the execution of implants / explants.
