Trump optimistic on the summit with Kim Jong-un, but if unsuccessful he will abandon the negotiations

US President Donald Trump, at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida estate, alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said he will cancel the scheduled summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un , or even leave the session while it is in progress, if diplomatic openness does not head for success.

"If I think it might be a fruitless meeting, we won't go."

The president, while acknowledging that this is a dangerous undertaking and that it could end in failure, nevertheless continued to express optimism about the outcome of the summit with Kim.

Among the potential obstacles to the meeting, Trump said, are the three American citizens detained by North Korea. The president said the United States "fought very diligently" to secure their release and that there is a chance for positive developments.
