Turkey: OECD - "strengthen consumer and business confidence to maintain positive national economic performance"

According to what was communicated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in Turkey "growth gained momentum in 2017". In both the first and second quarters, the expansion of the Turkish economy exceeded expectations, reaching 5,2 and 5,1% respectively. For the OECD, the Turkish economy will grow by 2017% by the end of 6, thanks to the recovery of the export sector and the tax incentive measures adopted by the Turkish government. According to the data provided by the organization, between January and September 2017, Turkish exports experienced an increase, compared to the same period in 2016, of about 10,5%, equal to about $ 115 billion.

Turkish President Erdogan, commenting on growth in the first six months of the year, said he expects "higher rates in the third and fourth quarters", adding that "economic growth is one of the fundamental objectives of the" Vision 2023 "plan, adopted by the government. of Ankara and which includes a series of political and economic purposes: from joining the European Union to entering the list of the top ten economic powers. These are the objectives that Turkey aims to achieve in conjunction with the centenary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic.

Although the country's growth gained momentum in 2017, the OECD predicts a decline in Turkey's growth over the next 2 years, which will remain between 4,5 - 5%.

According to the Turkish Central Bank, until the end of 2017, the inflation rate will vary between 9,3 - 10,3%. The decrease in inflation is proceeding slowly and still appears to be above the target (11,9% last October).

Furthermore, the OECD affirms that the Turkish economy must face the “continuous uncertainty linked to internal politics and the regional context”; it is therefore "essential to strengthen consumer and business confidence" to maintain the positive national economic situation. However, some data, published today by the Turkish statistical institute, in which it emerges that the consumer confidence index for the month of November, recorded a decline to 97,9 are not reassuring. A figure below 100 points signals pessimistic forecasts among consumers.
