Yesterday, around 18.00 pm Italian time, a car exploded on the "Rainbow Bridge", the bridge that joins Canada and the United States at the height of Niagara Falls. The toll shows two deaths, the occupants of the car and one minor injury.

The moment of the accident is recorded in the video from the US Customs surveillance cameras: a white car launched at very high speed hits an embankment and literally takes flight, going over a gate and then leaving the frame and crashing into the structures of the border gate. In the early hours there was talk of a probable terrorist attack. Late in the evening the FBI, through special agent Matthew Miraglia, announced that "there is no indication of a terrorist threat linked to the Rainbow Bridge incident”. The investigation is focused on one person, the officer added, and “at this point, it could just be something that happened, there's no bigger picture to look at right now.”

Also the governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, said there was “no indication of a terrorist attack,” adding that the vehicle was “incinerated,” with nothing left but the engine and that at least one of the people involved had “local” ties.

The two deceased people were husband and wife, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press. The driver of the vehicle lived in western New York State. From the examination of the first finds there are no traces of chemicals or other substances used for explosives.

The president of the United States Joe Biden is closely monitoring the situation, a White House statement said. The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, reporting hotly in Parliament, spoke of a "very serious situation", announcing the decision to "strengthen security at the border".
