US, Japan and South Korea strengthen anti-North Korea intelligence agreement

The Heads of Intelligence of United States, Japan e South Koread will meet in Seoul behind closed doors this week. A very important meeting to reconnect South Korea e Japan after controversy diplomat of the last two years which risked compromising intelligence cooperation between the two countries. The agreement, known as GSOMIA (General Security of Military Information Agreement), was born in 2016 with the American guarantee, with the aim of facilitating the sharing of information between South Korea and Japan on the missile and nuclear programs of the North Korea.

Historical claims make the agreement vacillating. South Korea, more than once publicly, has asked Japan for substantial financial reparation for inducing women into prostitution and using Korean citizens in forced labor during the annexation of Korea to Japan from 1910 to 1945.

Tokyo rejected the request by implementing a massive boycott of Japanese goods to South Korea thus limiting the export of electronic components, essential in the South Korean shipbuilding and automotive industries. He then removed South Korea from the list of export-favored countries to Japan. South Korea therefore, threatening not to renew the GSOMIA, albeit a few hours before the expiry of the GSOMIA, Seoul announced that it would extend the treaty.

In essence, a situation that was no longer tolerable had arisen which also had a negative impact on the GSOMIA agreement. To remedy directly the numbers one of the intelligence services, The Director of National Intelligence of the United States, Avril haines, and the director of the Japanese intelligence cabinet, Hiroaki Takizawa, they will meet Park Jie-won, the head of national intelligence of South Korea.

The three officials will meet behind closed doors for "Strengthen their trilateral intelligence cooperation", according to a report published by the Korean local press. There is also renewed hope in Seoul and Tokyo that relations between the two nations can be mended, following the election of a new government in Japan earlier this month, under the prime minister. Fumio Kishida. Officials are also expected to discuss efforts to restart negotiations with North Korea on a number of issues. Last month, South Korean President Moon Jae-in offered to start negotiations with North Korea to draft a formal declaration to officially end the 1950-1953 Korean War.
