Versalis: Eni's transformation of Porto Marghera continues

Versalis confirms the transformation of its activities in Porto Marghera and the creation of new industrial initiatives in the area. These initiatives are integrated into the Eni plan in the petrochemical and biorefinery areas for a total of over 500 million euros in investments and have the aim of accelerating the energy transition and the development of circular economy chemistry: with its realization they will be cut over 600.000 tons / year of CO2 emissions.

In Porto Marghera Versalis is building the first plant for the advanced mechanical recycling of post-consumer plastics, following the acquisition, in 2021, of Ecoplastic's technology and plants. The plants that produce styrene polymers from recycled raw material will be installed, which will arrive already selected and pre-treated. The overall capacity of this first phase will be approximately 20 thousand tons / year: the new products, which will allow to expand the portfolio of the Versalis Revive range of polymers and to consolidate the European leadership in recycled styrenic polymers, will be destined for application sectors for which the requirements of sustainability and circularity are essential, such as packaging and construction.

Versalis will also build in Porto Marghera the first plant in Italy for the production of isopropyl alcohol, which today is completely imported from abroad and which is used in numerous market sectors. The capacity of the new plant, 30 thousand tons / year, is in line with the national market demand and represents a strategic step for Versalis to specialize the portfolio of higher value products. A hydrogen production plant will also be built to service the isopropyl alcohol plant.

As part of this program, operations for the shutdown of the cracking and aromatic plants will begin on 9 May, with an estimated duration of 6 days. The competent Bodies will be constantly informed and updated on the progression of the shutdown interventions. The supply of ethylene and propylene to the industrial sites of Mantua and Ferrara will be guaranteed through the logistics hub which currently manages the flow of ships for the supply of incoming raw materials and various outgoing products. Investments for the strengthening of the hub have been underway for some time and have been partially made, with the aim of maximizing its reliability and flexibility, through the optimization of the new structure.

Versalis confirms that the transformation plan will be implemented ensuring maximum attention to employment balances.
