Violence against women, statistical survey on judicial proceedings under way

One more tool, for the knowledge and therefore the contrast of gender-based violence. From 1 January 2023, the Ministry of Justice is able to start collecting data relating to judicial proceedings on one of the most alarming phenomena. The goal, to carry out constant statistical analyses, to be published periodically to bring out the characteristics and evolution of criminal conduct.

Through an intervention on the information systems of the criminal area, all the Italian judicial offices are now in a position to record important data, such as the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator of the crime, the type of crime committed, the methods used.

A specific note was issued to the offices, to illustrate the aims of the intervention and the operating methods for entering data by judicial operators.

The Ministry intends to promote the utmost care for the collection of information useful for formulating the most effective responses with a view to preventing crimes and raising the standards of protection for victims.

The updating of the information systems of the judicial offices - in order to allow constant monitoring of the phenomenon - implements the objectives of the technical table set up as part of the collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and the National Institute of Statistics, to feed the bank data on gender-based violence with judicial information flows. The analysis of the various aspects of the phenomenon represents one of the main prevention tools, in line with the indications of the Convention of the Council of Europe and with the latest regulations on the subject of statistical surveys on gender-based violence (law n.53 of 5 May 2022).
