Workshop 'Braiding the Future'. The winners design the future

The winners of the 'Braiding the Future' workshop draw the future of Eni's installation at the Italian Pavilion of Expo 2020

The winning idea imagines the new life of Eni's installation, aiming at its recycling in line with the company's circular economy approach.

Eni and Maker Faire Rome (MFR) - The European Edition, in collaboration with Carlo Ratti Associati and the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI), announce the winner of the innovative workshop "Braiding the Future", the open initiative to the young students of the Institute and aimed at finding possible ideas for the recycling of Eni's installation in the Italian Pavilion of Expo 2020 Dubai.

The selected idea, which will be shown in digital format in the Italian Pavilion, in the area dedicated to Eni, has been baptized with the name of Wastology. It is an object that allows you to reuse organic waste by composting it directly in your kitchen. The compost is used to nourish the plants, placed in the upper part, which grow thanks to the support offered by the PVC sections obtained from the lianas, the “protagonists” of the installation. Wastology fully reflects the idea of “circularity” that was proposed as a challenge to the workshop participants.

The installation by Eni, one of the Official Platinum Sponsors of the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, symbolizes the company's commitment to a sustainable energy transition. Created by the architecture and innovation studio CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota, it recreates in an artistic key a cultivation of microalgae through a cascade of lianas, made of completely recycled and recyclable material, up to 20 meters long. Microalgae, illuminated by LEDs, flow inside each of them: the transparent circuit thus becomes a spectacular presentation of the biological process of growth of microalgae in the photobioreactor, where by feeding on CO2 these unicellular organisms produce compounds with high nutritional value and more.

The workshop involved 4 teams from the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation. The jury, made up of industrial partners, as well as the authors of the installation, evaluated the proposals on 5 indicators: originality, potential impact, feasibility, prototype and communicative impact.

All participating teams will be offered opportunities for visibility of their work, leveraging a wide range of communication opportunities throughout the year, for example on the occasion of Maker Faire Rome - The European Edition 2021, scheduled from 8 to 10 October.

Expo 2020 Dubai will take place from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. The theme chosen for the Exposition is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, which underlines the importance of the spirit of collaboration and cooperation to solve common challenges. Italy will participate in the event with the Italian Pavilion with the claim "Beauty unites people", linked to the message of Expo 2020.

Eni's commitment to the energy transition is reflected in the choice to focus on technological innovation to find new solutions for the production of energy with the lowest carbon impact. In fact, thanks to the collaboration with over 70 Universities and Research Centers around the world, Eni is developing new technologies in the field of decarbonisation, renewable energy and circular economy that will be presented in the Eni space at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Maker Faire Rome - The European Edition 2021 will also further strengthen its commitment to sustainability as a lever for development and growth: since its first edition, the event has strongly promoted the value of design and creativity for the transformation of society and has supported the Sustainable Development objectives of Agenda 2030, which also inspire its platform activities for digital transformation and training for citizens and businesses.
