Xi and Biden discuss Taiwan, sanctions and Chinese aid to Russian industry during a phone call

Editorial

Xi Jinping e Joe Biden held a fruitful telephone conversation, the news was reported by the official Chinese media which highlighted how "the two leaders exchanged candid and in-depth views on the state of China-US relations and issues of mutual interest.". The White House confirmed the telephone meeting, specifying that it was their first telephone communication since July 2022. The two leaders last saw each other in person in November 2023 in California.

The Taiwan issue has been defined as “the insurmountable red line in China-US relations“. During the phone call with Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping guaranteed that “We will not allow separatist activities, external interference and support for Taiwan independence forces to go unchecked”. He also added, as reported by Xinhua, “We expect the United States to implement the President's assurance that it will not support Taiwan's independence.". Biden and Xi addressed numerous issues in an "open" and "constructive" way, as confirmed by the White House, with Biden underlining “the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and respecting the law and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea".

Biden also raised US concerns with Xi Jinping about cooperation between Beijing and Moscow to boost Russia's military industry.

Xi Jinping warned Joe Biden about the “uninterrupted series of measures to stifle the Chinese economy, trade, science and technology", emphasizing that "if the United States is willing to undertake mutual cooperation and share the benefits of China's development, our door will always be open; if they insist on suppressing China's high-tech development and depriving it of its legitimate right to development, we will not stand by and watch“. CCTV reported that “the list of sanctions against Chinese companies is increasingly longer: this does not reduce the risk, but increases it".
