The ABI conducted an in-depth analysis based on the data just published by the Bank of Italy: in June 2023 loans in Italy recorded an annual reduction of -2,4%, but there are significant differences at a territorial level. In the South, loans grew by 0,5%, in the Islands they remained at the same value as last year, while they decreased in the North-West (-1,3%), in the North-East (-2,2%) and especially in Central Italy (-5,0%).

In the regions, financing grew in June 2023 compared to June 2022 in Molise (+1,4%), Campania (+1,1%), Puglia (+0,4%), Sardinia (+0,4%), Basilicata (+0,3%). The highest reductions are recorded in Valle d'Aosta (-8,5%), Lazio (-6,0%), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (-5,7%), Autonomous Province of Trento (-5,1% ).

Loans to businesses are decreasing: -3,4% at national level; -3,4% in the North-West; -3,6% in the North-East, -5,1% in the Centre, -0,4% in the South and -1,1% in the Islands. The regions with a positive sign are Molise (+4,0%), Campania (+1,1%), Autonomous Province of Bolzano (+1,5%).

However, loans to families are growing. At a national level they increase on an annual basis in June 2023 by 1% and in all the different territorial areas: +0,6% in the North West, +0,8% in the North East, +1,0% in the Centre, +2,0 .1,5% in the South and +2,5% in the Islands. The highest growth rates of loans to families are recorded in Puglia (+2,1%) and Campania (+1,0%), with a reduction in the province of Trento (-0,8%), in the Marche (- 0,5%), Valle d'Aosta (-0,4%), Liguria (-XNUMX%).

In terms of credit quality, in the second quarter of 2023, at a national level and in individual territorial areas, there were reductions compared to the previous quarter in non-performing loans and unlikely to pay, while overdue or overdrawn loans are increasing, the first sign of a worsening in credit quality. credit: the phenomenon affects all the different areas of Italy.

Of the total bad debts, 14,4 billion euros are attributable to businesses, 2,6 billion for mortgages for home purchases and 1,2 billion for consumer credit.

The ratio of bad debts to loans is higher in the regions of Southern Italy, 2,2%, compared to 1,2% in the whole of Italy, 0,9% in the North and 1% in the Centre: the highest values ​​are recorded in Calabria ( 2,4%), in Sicily and Sardinia with 2,3%; the lowest level (0,6%) in Trentino-Alto Adige.

If companies are considered alone, the ratio of bad debts to loans rises to 2% in Italy, to 3,4% in the South, to 1,5% in the North and to 2,7% in Central Italy.
