Iran Nuclear Agreement: US GBU-57 MOP anti-bunker bomb ready for Israel

A senior US government official told Reuters that US and Israeli defense chiefs are discussing possible joint military exercises in preparation for an attack aimed at destroying Iranian nuclear facilities.

The planned talks in the United States with the Israeli Defense Minister, Benny Gantz, they follow an October 25 briefing given by Pentagon leaders to the White House National Security Advisor Jake sullivan. The briefing exposed all the military options available to not allow Iran to produce a nuclear weapon.

The preparations between the United States and Israel cause much concern in the international community for the unpredictable development that military escalation could have.

The military acceleration of the last few hours took place after the intransigence shown by Iran during the indirect talks in Vienna. Talks reactivated last September by President Biden and thwarted by diplomacy by the new leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the ultra-conservative and anti-Western Ebrhaim Raisi, who took office last June.

The 2015 agreement had granted Iran a relaxation of economic sanctions by imposing strict limits on its uranium enrichment activities, extending the time it takes to produce fissile material, which is needed to build a nuclear weapon. Former President Trump broke the deal in 2018 by imposing 1500 new economic sanctions on Tehran.

The US official declined to provide details on the military plans but commented on the situation hoping for a reasonable return to the talks table: "We are in this mess because the Iranian nuclear program is advancing to a point beyond which there is no conventional logic".

Il Chief of Israeli Defense on twitter he said: "We will discuss with the US about possible ways of action to avert Iran's attempt to complete the nuclear program and increase its influence in the region ".

Nuclear negotiations with Iran will resume soon, says an EU official. It is no coincidence that the US special envoy for Iran will reach Vienna this weekend.

Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said last week that Iran has started the process of enriching uranium up to 20% purity with a cluster of 166 advanced IR-6 machines at the his Fordow plant, cleverly hidden within a mountain.

Dennis Ross, a former senior US official and Middle East expert has publicly denounced Washington's willingness to equip the Israeli army with a 30-pound bomb capable of destroying underground reinforced concrete bunkers. GBU-57 MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator).

It is a guided anti-bunker bomb developed for the American Air Force (USAF), which, with a weight of 30.000 pounds, is considered the one with the highest penetration capacity, even reaching 60 m depth in reinforced concrete.
