Despite the adverse weather conditions, the intervention made it possible to identify the coordinates of the man's phone
Late yesterday evening, Friday 24 November, an HH-139B of the 83rd SAR (Search and Rescue) Centre, of the 15th Wing of Cervia, took off in search of a 65-year-old man missing in the Monte Torano area (Massa -Carrara), at the request of CNSAS (National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps) Tuscany.
The intervention, carried out despite the adverse weather conditions and the strong wind, made it possible to identify the geographical coordinates of the missing person's telephone thanks to the presence on board of the Artemis system, equipped with latest generation technologies, which crosses various sources of geolocalization and allows the helicopter's infrared camera (FLIR – Forward Looking InfraRed) to precisely point to the detected point.
The crew, which was unable to intervene directly due to bad weather and the inaccessible area, promptly communicated the coordinates to the CNSAS, with which the Armed Force collaborates continuously, which is continuing the searches with recovery teams on the ground.
The 15th Wing of the Air Force guarantees, 24 hours a day, 24 days a year, without interruption, the search and rescue of flight crews in difficulty, also contributing to public utility activities such as research of those missing at sea or in the mountains, the emergency medical transport of patients in imminent danger of life and the rescue of seriously traumatized patients, also operating in extreme weather conditions.
From its establishment to today, the crews of the 15th Wing have saved more than 7800 people in danger of their lives. Since 2018, the Department has acquired the AIB (Forest Firefighting) capability, contributing to the prevention and fight against fires throughout the national territory as part of the joint force device implemented by the Defense.
