In a previous question, unrelated to the Italian situation, von der Leyen had described the European Commission as the "guardian" of the EU treaties and explained the tools that the executive has at its disposal to correct legal violations.
"The vote - continues Ceccardi - it is an expression of the freedom of Italian citizens, as enshrined in our Constitution. National sovereignty is not in question and it cannot be a European commissioner who teaches voters how to vote or not. If the Italians choose the center-right, the center-right will go to govern. Nobody can afford to stop it. I believe that all of Europe should be indignant, because the founding values of that same Europe do not foresee impositions and power games aimed at preventing democracy from being applied.".
For Ceccardi "Von der Leyen's attack is anti-institutional and aimed at dismissing any government legitimized by the vote of Italian voters. Her behavior is shameful and unspeakable for a representative of a European institution that should be super partes. If the president of the Commission thinks so, she resigns from a position that she evidently does not even know how to fill. We do not accept lessons of democracy from anyone ”.
