Conte-Renzi, year-end duel on a razor's edge

(by Francesco Matera) An IV executive, writes Ansa, took a picture of the current Italian political situation: "Conte wants to stay at Conte bis, Renzi wants to replace Conte, the Democratic Party would support Conte ter"

The solution, the manager specifies, is the birth of a new Conte government, with a greater presence of parties, perhaps with two deputy premieres of the Pd and M5s, and an agreement on some political points, from Recovery to the electoral law.

But to specify the line was Matteo Renzi directly who made it clear that he will not be satisfied 'with small concessions and will not give up' on the delegation to the Services. On the parliamentary passage ventilated by Conte as a challenge to Renzi, the leader of IV responded in kind: "It is not a concession from the premier but an obligatory step if Iv withdraws from the government, withdrawing the ministers".

However, there could be a convergence of the majority on a Count ter, with the premier handing over the delegation to the Services to a man of his trust and the entry of two deputy premieres or in any case the change of weight ministers.

The Dems are waiting to see how the premier's statements, including the one on the electoral law strongly requested by the Democratic Party, will be translated at the government table. The M5 governors are a barrier to the premier, but also among the pentastellati there would be a push for a reshuffle and some fear of a possible “count list” capable of removing votes from the Movement.

Most people are however convinced that the clash with Renzi has gone too far. And hypotheses - denials - go crazy of external support of the Renzians in government or of a split in the groups that leads some Renzians to leave Iv and merge with centrist senators, from Maie and former Fi, in a group of leaders.

"The numbers do not have them - they say from Iv - if Conte does not put things back in line, a Franceschini or Draghi government is more easily born". Of course, some Renzians admit, the senator from Rignano should take responsibility for a break in the middle of the pandemic and also the risk of ending up in the opposition or going to elections. But from Iv they are convinced that Renzi would be ready to respond in kind to the premier in the Chamber, accusing him of a not flawless management of the emergency and a delay on vaccines: “Who is irresponsible and replies the Papeete? Who insists on holding the delegation to the services or who asks for the respect of Parliament? ", questions an executive of Iv.

Iv, however, opens to one mission structure on the governance of the Italian Recovery Plan but makes no discount: "On the method and on the merits, from justice to cybersecurity, an abyss separates us".

For his part, Prime Minister Conte does not give in on the delegation to services, he does not wink at the reshuffle and above all at the formula of the two deputy premieres. And he proves that he is now ready to play it all out: “If the confidence of a party fails, it will go to Parliament”.

In the long press conference at the end of the year, the premier does not express himself on the Mes but accelerates the Recovery Plan: “I didn't say everything is fine, if we don't have the governance structure yet, it means we have to hurry. We have to run. What has been missing so far is the final political synthesis, where it is right that each party has its say on resources ”.

On the reshuffle Conte says: “The theme must be posed by the parties even if the current government team“ a captain defends it in every way ”.

On services, the premier is adamant: "The delegation is a prerogative of the premier, who asks me to sell it, explain why"

All the answers will be had, therefore, in the month of January, we will see how far the two duelists, Giuseppe Conte and Matteo Renzi, will go.

A very dangerous duel that could lead the country to elections in full health emergency. In all this, the silence of our President of the Republic is truly deafening, who expressed himself in some public circumstances calling only for greater cohesion.
