Fight against online child pornography: 5 arrests in Lombardy

Operation Ontario 3

As part of a complex operation aimed at combating online child pornography, the State Police has carried out, in recent days, 21 searches in the Lombardy provinces of Como, Lodi, Monza Brianza, Milan, Pavia and Varese, allowing the arrest of 4 people in the act of committing a crime for possession of a large quantity of child pornography and of a person who, for years, committed sexual abuse against two pre-adolescent girls related to him by kinship and a friend. Minors were often entrusted to men, who enjoyed the trust of their parents. The operation made it possible to document that the five people arrested produced child pornography by inducing very young people, even as young as seven/eight years old, to perform sexual acts via streaming or to film themselves in acts of autoeroticism.

This important result was made possible by exploiting the high specialization of the operators who, during the search, carried out the IT inspection of the telephones, the analysis of the chats and the subsequent seizure of the devices used by the suspects, thus allowing stop sexual violence activities carried out by at least six producers.

The computer searches of the devices found in the possession of the suspects revealed disturbing details regarding their involvement in the online sharing of videos depicting sexual abuse against young children, including newborns.

The investigation, carried out by the Operations Center for Cyber Security in Milan and directed by the local Public Prosecutor's Office, was initiated by the National Center for Combating Online Child Pornography (CNCPO) of the Postal and Communications Police Service, following a report received in the context of international police cooperation relating to Italian users involved in the detention and dissemination of child pornography on a well-known social network.

The Milan Postal Police analyzed over 117.000 connections, managing to identify 26 people, of which 5 were already burdened by specific prejudices, who, to remain anonymous, had created the social profiles used to carry out the illicit conduct using email accounts opened with fictitious data and by accessing the network through "open" Wi-Fi or connections registered to third parties.

The activity, carried out by specialized personnel through the use of modern investigation techniques, made it possible to identify various subjects involved and to seize numerous IT devices within which thousands of multimedia files of a child pornography nature were found.

It is stated that the criminal proceedings are all in the preliminary investigation phase and that the subjects under investigation must be considered not guilty until the final conviction.
