Woman expecting twins rushed from Bari to Rome

The special ambulance flight ended late yesterday evening with the landing of the military aircraft at Ciampino airport

A complex emergency medical transport carried out by the Air Force in favor of a young woman expecting twins, one of which is life-threatening, ended positively late yesterday evening, with the landing at the Ciampino military airport. , which needed to be transferred as quickly as possible from the “Di Venere” Hospital in Bari to the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome.

The request for emergency air transport was the Local Health Authority of Bari, through the Prefecture of the Apulian capital, which was followed - after rapid coordination with the health structures involved - with the take-off order from the Operations Room of the Aerospace Operations Command of Poggio Renatico (Ferrara) to one of the crews of the 46th Air Brigade always ready for take-off for this type of intervention.

The aircraft, which departed from the permanent base in Pisa, then headed to Bari, where it boarded the ambulance with the woman on board for the transfer to Rome, where, as mentioned, she was waiting for hospitalization and the necessary specialist care at the Polyclinic Twins. This particular type of medical transport made it possible to reduce the patient transfer times to a minimum, while ensuring constant monitoring and medical assistance given the critical conditions of one of the two children.

Air Force crews and transport aircraft are ready every single day of the year, 24 hours a day, to ensure, where requested and deemed necessary for urgent reasons, the medical transport of people in imminent danger of life, organs or medical teams or, as in this case, people in need of transfer to specialized treatment centers throughout the country. Every year there are hundreds of flight hours carried out for this type of intervention by the aircraft of the 24st Wing of Ciampino, the 31th Wing of Pratica di Mare and the 14th Air Brigade of Pisa, as happened in this mission. The aircraft of the Pisa Air Brigade are the only ones, in particular, that can guarantee this type of transport, which also includes the boarding of an ambulance. This is an essential capability when the patient's condition requires constant medical assistance and very tight transfer times, a capability that the Air Force and Defense has made available to the country extensively during the Covid emergency for air transport in bio-containment.
