Eni undertakes not to carry out exploration and development activities in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites

Eni announces today its formal commitment not to carry out exploration and development activities in the Natural Sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The commitment gives official recognition to a policy that Eni is already following in its operations. It is another step that is part of the journey of transformation of the company. Starting from its business model, Eni focuses on long-term investments, going beyond short-term profit priorities both from an operational and a social point of view, as recognized by the new corporate mission, inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

"This commitment reflects our ambition to help find solutions to the challenges the world is facing and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals," he has declared Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni.

The company also today stressed its already existing commitment to the conservation of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BES). Operating in diversified environmental contexts around the world, with different ecological sensitivities and different regulatory regimes, Eni manages the issue of biodiversity through its own BES management model. This model has developed over time also thanks to long-term collaborations with recognized international organizations that are leaders in the conservation of biodiversity.

The texts of today's formal commitment

Eni does not carry out hydrocarbon exploration and development activities within the boundaries of the Natural Sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List (as of the date of the 31 May 2019). When we carry out activities (exploration, development and production) in areas important for biodiversity, we are committed to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) through the adoption of our management model in line with Eni's BES Policy. When we are present in a joint venture in which we are not operators, we are committed to promoting the development and adoption of good management practices in line with our BES Policy with our partners.
