Erna and FCA together for the electric mobility to the experimentation of innovative services for the V2G

A new technological laboratory will rise in Turin: a demonstration fleet will test the Vehicle-to-Grid for the sustainability, safety and flexibility of the national electricity grid

Terna's Chief Executive Officer and General Manager, Luigi Ferraris, and FCA's Chief Operating Officer in EMEA, Pietro Gorlier, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today for the joint experimentation of sustainable mobility technologies and services, such as the Vehicle -to-Grid (V2G) which allows electric cars to interact with the network thanks to a 'smart' charging infrastructure.

The cooperation between the two companies involves the construction of the E-mobility Lab at the Terna headquarters in Turin, an innovative technological laboratory that will allow users to test the performance and capacity of electric cars in providing services to support the flexibility and stabilization of the electricity grid, as well as their unidirectional and bidirectional interaction with the network through a dedicated recharging infrastructure. In addition, the feasibility study will be launched for an experimental demonstration fleet of electric cars connected to the network through a V2G infrastructure, to be built in an area within the Mirafiori FCA industrial complex.

Connecting the vehicles to the charging infrastructure will create an extra power request to the grid at certain times of the day. The intelligent management of top-ups through the V2G columns will, in this sense, allow electric cars to support the management of the electricity grid, providing services aimed at satisfying the system's need for flexibility. The capacity provided by electric cars will help stabilize the network and, at the same time, reduce the overall cost of operation of the car itself, thanks to the economic benefit deriving from the services provided to the electricity grid.

“With this agreement, Terna confirms the central role of innovation and research for new technologies at the service of the ongoing energy transition. The collaboration with an excellence like FCA allows to share the specific competences matured in order to develop solutions and new resources of flexibility necessary to guarantee an increasingly sustainable, efficient, reliable and safe electrical system "declared the Managing Director and General Manager of Terna , Luigi Ferraris.

“The agreement with Terna is part of a series of initiatives launched by FCA to support electric mobility. The Vehicle-to-Grid technologies represent an opportunity to optimize the operating costs of the cars for the benefit of motorists, as well as a concrete possibility to contribute to the sustainability and improvement of the performance of the electricity grid ", commented the Chief Operating Officer of FCA in EMEA, Pietro Gorlier.
