Waiting for Iranian revenge, 28 Israeli embassies close

Editorial

About thirty embassies closed their doors without incident during Quds Day, the international day for Jerusalem proclaimed by Iran. Israel has taken precautions by closing 28 diplomatic offices in different parts of the world (including Rome), especially considering fears of possible Iranian reprisals following the attack on its consulate in Damascus, Syria.

There were, as happens every year, several demonstrations by Palestinians celebrating the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The celebrations are held during the last Friday of Ramadan. The attack on the Israeli consulate was never claimed by Israel, but it caused the death of a senior member of the military hierarchy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria

Tehran has promised revenge. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said: “We are certain that this feeling from the heart will lead to the destruction of the Zionist regime".

According to US intelligence reports, Iran is planning a large-scale retaliatory attack that could involve Shaheed drones and cruise missiles. The objectives and timing of the operation are unknown, but a possible proportional response to the Damascus attack could include striking an Israeli diplomatic facility by the end of Ramadan next week.

From Beirut, Hezbollah leader Nasrallah thundered: “When the war is over, Israel will face major consequences, including investigations and resignations, and this is what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to avoid”.

US authorities hope to arrange a meeting with an Israeli government delegation within the next two weeks, in order to avoid the announced operation in Rafah. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby announced this possibility during a press briefing, adding that discussions with Israel are ongoing.

US President Joe Biden said Israel is complying with the White House's requests for aid to Gaza, after a long phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the raid on the US NGO World Central Kitchen. Israel also announced approval of the opening of the Erez border crossing.
