Iraq, Isis uses old technique: they wear army uniforms for fatal attacks

On September 14, while the north of the country was gradually freed from the presence of Al Baghdadi's men, in the vicinity of Nassiriyah - in the southern governorate of Dhi Qar - ISIS men carried out three different operations within a radius of a few tens of kilometers, on the route connecting Baghdad with the southern provinces, an area with a strong Shiite majority. On board some SUVs and armed with grenades and machine guns, the militiamen left 87 dead on the ground in a single day. The survivors of the attacks such as Hussein Al Shawili, who escaped from the back of a restaurant in Fadak, the site of the massacre perpetrated by the terrorists, told of a particular recurring also in other attacks of the same period: the militiamen were all dressed in military uniform, which has helped take the victims by surprise. The Iraqi parliament has also been talking about it for a few days: ISIS is planning other attacks in the south, to "compensate" for the losses in the north and west of the country at the hands of Iraqi security forces and pro-Iranian Shiite paramilitary militias.

For this reason, the assembly has just voted to strengthen security in the region by sending reinforcements, military convoys and other militias to strategic checkpoints. Strengthening security has not, in fact, prevented the attacks from happening and causing dozens of deaths. The first attack took place in Fadak last week, when five militiamen in military uniforms fired on the crowd in a commercial area, then stole two cars and flew south. About twenty kilometers further, they engaged in a fire fight with the police, blowing up a car and killing both soldiers and civilians. Also in Fadak, in the same hours, the attack on the restaurant in which Hussein al Shawili was saved, and in which two militiamen after firing on some soldiers blew themselves up outside the restaurant, causing the detonation of some parked cars which helped to raise the death toll. The terrorist actions also had consequences on the direct management of security: the Minister of the Interior Qassim al Araji in fact removed from his post the commander in charge of intelligence in the Nassiriyah area, arresting the person in charge for a few hours. control of motorways and searches. "Daesh has mobilized its sleeper cells and is returning to using old tactics, using government means and making its men wear military uniforms to escape security checks at checkpoints," explains a federal agent on condition of anonymity. Middle east eye. “There would not have been all these casualties if the security services had acted professionally. The militiamen moved within three provinces and no one stopped them, just because they were wearing military uniforms. There is also a problem of cooperation between security agencies. “Who is it that would ever ask an army officer for an identity document or search his vehicle?” Asks another police officer interviewed sarcastically. “Anyone who did would be arrested for at least five days, and if they were not arrested they would still be moved and sent to serve in another area, or at least beaten by the security staff of the detained officer.
