The State Police for the world day of "remembrance of road victims"

In view of the world day in "remembrance of road victims" which occurs today, the State Police carried out a widespread campaign to combat driving in a state of psychophysical alteration due to alcohol and/or drug abuse carried out on the weekends between 6 October and 5 November 2023, with 1.323 checkpoints, 44.771 people identified and 24.350 vehicles checked.

The drivers who tested positive for alcohol were 1.461, equal to approximately 6% of those tested with a precursor and breathalyzer.

The drivers found in a state of alteration due to drug use during the 109 services carried out with the aid of the State Police Health Services were 90, equal to 14% of those checked (7).

For road accidents, the data assumed allows us to find an overall decrease in accidents, which are 52.433 in the period January September 2023 compared to the same period in 2022 in which there were 52.465 accidents. The number of deaths also decreased -9,5% and those injured -2,5%.

Road accidents continue to represent a cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 29 and the most important causes are confirmed as distracted driving and speed.

These data, on the occasion of the world day of "remembrance of road victims", will be presented during a series of meetings organized throughout the national territory to raise awareness and spread road safety education.

The last stage of these meetings is scheduled for November 23rd in Rome in the splendid and evocative setting of the Cinecittà studios in the presence of authorities, exceptional guests and testimonies from family members and victims of road accidents who will tell their experiences to an audience of over 1300 students.

In particular, the meeting with school students of all levels will focus on "pills" of legality and road safety. Also present is the "blue bus" which will invite children to follow a route, simulating with special glasses the effects on driving of altered perceptions caused by the intake of alcohol or drugs.

These meetings with the new generations of road users and future vehicle drivers are always an opportunity for growth and serve to ensure that we do not lose sight of the ambitious objective of bringing the number of victims from road accidents to zero.
