Mobile Angel, the Smart watch against gender violence

Mobile Angel is now an enhanced service thanks to the collaboration between the Carabinieri, the Vodafone Italia Foundation and the Soroptimist International club of Naples, Milan alla Scala, Milan Founder and Turin.

The 12-month trial at the Provincial Commands of Milan, Naples and Turin was concluded, which involved the strengthening of Mobile Angel, the wearable device for the protection of women in danger. The public prosecutor's offices of the aforementioned capitals were also involved in the experiment, including that of Ivrea (TO).

The project was born in 2018 and sees the collaboration between the Vodafone Italia Foundation, the Carabinieri and Soroptimist International club of Naples, Milan alla Scala, Milan Founder and Turin. Mobile Angel is a device connected to the mobile phone on which a dedicated app is installed capable of activating a request for intervention at the Carabinieri.

The experiment, launched in 2022, aimed to improve the software and measure the effectiveness of the initiative. 50 Smart watch bracelets were therefore assigned between Naples, Milan, Turin and Ivrea to women in situations already reported and known to the Carabinieri; after a year of monitoring, the results obtained are the confirmation of an increased perception of safety by the victims and a deterrent function of the emergency apparatus towards the attackers. In Milan, in a specific circumstance that occurred during the observation period, the activation of the alarm system by the victim via Mobile Angel allowed the timely intervention of the Radiomobile Unit and the immediate removal of the stalker at the sole sight of the patrol. Thanks to the collaboration between the Vodafone Italia Foundation and the Soroptimist International Club, 45 devices were delivered, to be distributed between Naples, Milan and Turin. The devices are equipped with an alarm reception system installed at the respective Operations Centers and with the operating software update management system. Instead, five devices were donated by the aforementioned Foundation to the Provincial Command of Turin for the operational needs of the commands operating within the competence of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Ivrea.

With the Italian Union of Soroptimist International, the Carabinieri entered into an agreement in 2015, formalized in 2019 with a Memorandum of Understanding, with the aim of ensuring an effective collaboration which has allowed the creation of over 200 premises , located in the Carabinieri barracks in the area, intended to listen to women who have suffered gender violence and other vulnerable victims, or "A Room of One's Own".

Vodafone Foundation, another partner of the Mobile Angel project, has long been committed to combating gender violence, for example with the Bright Sky mobile app which provides resources, support and concrete tools to women who suffer domestic violence and mistreatment. The App can be downloaded for free and can also be used by relatives, friends, work colleagues, associations and all those close to abused women. Bright Sky provides information on different types of violence and empowers women to gain more awareness on how to manage their situation. At the same time, the App provides a mapping of support services dealing with abuse, both locally and nationally. Quick dial to 112 is also available, which can be activated with a single tap on each page of the App.
