Italy-Ethiopia Memorandum, Valditara: "Cooperation and education to face development challenges"

On the occasion of his mission to Ethiopia, the Minister of Education and Merit, Prof. Giuseppe Valditara, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ethiopian Minister of Education, Prof. Berhanu Nega, to strengthen and relaunch collaboration between the systems of Italian and Ethiopian education.

The Memorandum established, in particular, that the partners will encourage:

  • collaboration in the education sector as a fundamental tool to promote cultural exchanges between the two countries within the framework of the strategic partnership between Italy and Ethiopia;
  • knowledge of the Italian language, not only for an increasingly strong integration between the two countries, but also to acquire technical skills suited to the specific needs of the production system of Italy and Ethiopia;
  • the promotion of Technical and Professional Education in Ethiopia in order to improve knowledge and skills aimed at promoting Italian entrepreneurship and the growth of Ethiopia;
  • the development of a program of activities focused on partnerships between technical institutes and ITS Academies with innovative educational programs;
  • cooperation and exchanges between secondary education institutions of both countries as part of the MIM "Growing together" project.

Minister Valditara declared: “We are convinced that cooperation and education are the best tools to face development challenges. Among the various commitments undertaken, Italy will provide the necessary support for the training of local technical operators who can contribute to development in strategic sectors and possibly be employed by the same Italian companies that invest in Ethiopia. Thanks to a good level of preparation in the Italian language and culture, we also plan to train personnel who can be hired in Italy, thus encouraging regular immigration that starts from skills, as hoped for by Confindustria and other business organisations".

“To further increase collaboration between the two countries”, continued Minister Valditara, “we have decided, in implementation of the 'Mattei Plan', to set up a joint committee, with the presence of entrepreneurs, to open new technical-professional directions in Ethiopia, also enhancing the excellent Italian school in Addis Ababa and establishing an ITS in the Ethiopian capital".
