Migrants, shipwreck off the coast of Sardinia, two dead and 8 missing

(by Giovanni D'Agata, "Rights Window”) The journey on a small boat to reach Sardinia by a group of Algerians has turned into a tragedy. The engine stalled and the punt was left adrift a few kilometers from Isola del Toro, near Sant'Antioco, on the south west coast of the island. Three migrants were rescued, the bodies of two young people were fished out of the sea and it is suspected that there are still others missing in the water. Research at sea by the Italian Coast Guard and Guardia di Finanza is underway, while the carabinieri and police are working on land. The migrants would not have waited for help to arrive, diving into the sea to swim to the coast. And so the trip on a small boat to reach Sardinia for a group of Algerians turned into a tragedy. Research continues today and will also be intensified with the intervention of air vehicles. The entire stretch of sea will be patrolled and the entire area where landings take place will be controlled. During the week, the Port Authority had started the search for another boat with 14 migrants on board. Also in that case a group of Algerians who arrived in Sardinia had declared that they had left together with other boats: one had returned to Algeria, the other had lost track. The research started immediately had not given any results. The migrants, taking advantage of the good sea conditions, leave Annaba, in northeastern Algeria, towards the coasts of southern Sardinia, aboard wooden boats with outboard motors. The journey takes about 12 hours and then they land on the coasts of Sardinia, between Sant'Antioco, Teulada, Sant'Anna Arresi. Only 63 arrived last week.
