Wall of Jericho, the document of the Hamas attack underestimated by the Israelis

Editorial

The document entitled “Wall of Jericho” reveals Hamas' plan of attack against Israel in detail, with a quote from the Koran predicting the action. The New York Times made the plan public, noting that Israeli forces had known about it for over a year. The plan included the massive launch of rockets, the neutralization of the watchtowers, the infiltration with motorbikes and hang gliders, and the targeted action to take control of the Reim command base.

Despite reports from female soldiers who had raised the alarm already in the previous summer, the Israeli military leaders underestimated the plan, considering it more an aspiration of Hamas than a concrete threat. Consultations among officials did not lead to adequate countermeasures, and anomalous activities along the border were dismissed as baseless “fantasies.”

The errors in the assessments were accentuated by blind trust in the digital defense system and other factors, such as the malfunction of the spy balloons used to monitor the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, some military units had stopped intercepting the radio communications of individual units, believing it to be useless.

The revelations have generated three main issues: potential conflicts between the Ministry of Defense and Prime Minister Netanyahu, the search for explanations by the factions involved and the question of Netanyahu's information regarding the Hamas plan. The situation has not yet reached its conclusion and could lead to further developments and investigations.
