In 2022 +1,26% of active companies compared to 2021. Job positions are also increasing: +4,91%

In the year 2022, the non-agricultural private sector companies that were active are 1.669.941; compared to 2021, an increase of approximately 1,26% is observed.

At a regional level, the greatest increase occurs in the Molise region (1,74%) and Abruzzo (1,74%), followed by Sardinia (1,73%). The regions that recorded the smallest increase were Friuli-Venezia Giulia (0,43%), Marche (0,54%) and Piedmont (0,70%).

The average annual number of job positions in 2022 was 14.905.424, with an increase of 4,91 percentage points compared to the previous year. Also in the year 2022, the total sum of annual contributions is approximately 151 billion euros, with a percentage change of +8,58% compared to the previous year.

Analyzing the historical series of the number of active companies from 2013 to 2022, we observe a decrease until 2014 and a fluctuating trend in the following years, with a strong decrease in 2020 and an increase in 2021 and 2022. Shifting attention to the "places of jobs” (or “job positions”), a decrease was observed in 2014 and, subsequently, a trend reversal with a regular increase until 2019, a strong decrease in 2020 and a recovery in the following two years.

The region with the greatest presence of businesses is Lombardy, which has 17,03% of businesses in its territory, while the one with the lowest presence is Valle d'Aosta with 0,26%. Job positions are also more concentrated in Lombardy and Lazio with percentages equal to 25,39% and 12,94% respectively. The smallest number of job positions is found in Valle d'Aosta, with 0,18%.

Annual contributions were paid most in the North-West regions, with a total of 60,9 billion euros paid in 2022; followed by the regions of the North-East with 36,5 billion, those of the Center with 31,9 billion, those of the South with 15,6 billion and finally those of the Islands with 6,2 billion euros.

The largest number of active companies is recorded in Lombardy (284.366), followed by Lazio (170.411), Campania (151.400) and Veneto (142.000). Basilicata, with 14.158 companies, Molise (8.065) and Valle d'Aosta (4.289) are the regions with the lowest number of active companies. Companies that have up to 15 job positions represent almost all (92,83%). In particular, approximately 77,68% of the total is made up of micro-enterprises with a number of job positions less than or equal to five.

If we consider, however, the average annual number of working positions (or jobs), then companies "with up to 15 working positions" provide 33,02% of the total jobs. Companies with "16 and more job positions" represent 7,17% of the total companies, but provide 66,98% of the total jobs.

The largest number of active companies in 2022 is concentrated in the "Wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" sector, which includes 21,82% of total companies, followed by the "Manufacturing activities" sector, of which 14,63% of the companies start, and from the "Accommodation and catering services activities" sector, with 14,21% of the companies.

 The sectors that provide the most jobs are those of "Manufacturing activities", with 24,74%, followed by the "Wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" sector with 14,89% and by the sector “Rental, travel agencies, business support services” with 10,96%.
