Perego – strategic implications of the war in Ukraine for Italy

Speech at the International Affairs Institute

“Almost two years of Russian war on Ukraine have strategic implications for NATO and European defense, in turn influencing Italy's defense policy” said the Undersecretary of State for Defense Matteo Perego of Cremnago in his final speech at the event organized by the International Affairs Institute (IAI), “The prolonged and large-scale, high-intensity conflict between almost equal forces on the ground – thanks to Western military support for Ukraine – presents a series of lessons also for the Italian armed forces, in each of the five operational domains (land, naval, air, space and cyber) and at joint forces level".

“The ongoing wars” continues Perego “also considering the hybrid war of the Houthis in the Red Sea, present direct and indirect implications for the aerospace and defense industry, at a national and European level, also contextualized to a critical geopolitical scenario, with heated conflicts and democracies at risk”.

“The analysis carried out by the expert researchers of the IAI” concluded the Undersecretary in his speech “leads to numerous conclusions and effective strategies that not only the country must face but many large European states, from the importance of the national role in the Atlantic alliance operating in the wider Mediterranean, to the European Defense where strengthening is needed and an important signal is that of these hours with the approval of the Aspides mission to defend merchant traffic in the Red Sea with our Navy, and the absolute importance of technological superiority multidomain (terrestrial, air, maritime, space and cyber) in synergy with the National Defense industry which must also be involved in all crucial EU initiatives to allow Europe to face the Russian threat to its collective security".
