State Police and SOS Foundation collaborate for the protection of minors

Telephone Azzurro Onlus announce a collaboration for the protection of minors and the prevention of online abuse

An agreement was signed today in Rome between the State Police and the SOS Foundation – Il Telefono Azzurro Onlus for the protection of minors and the prevention of online abuse. The protocol, signed by the Chief of Police-General Director of Public Security Lamberto Giannini and by the President of the SOS Foundation - Il Telefono Azzurro, Professor Ernesto Caffo, falls within the scope of the directives issued by the Minister of the Interior for the strengthening of the activity of prevention and contrast to violence against minors online through the signing of agreements with institutional and private organizations.

The SOS Foundation – Il Telefono Azzurro Onlus was created to be able to listen to children's requests for help, a concrete response to the "right to be heard" recognized to children by the International Convention on the Rights of the Child signed by the United Nations. Today, Telefono Azzurro manages the 114 Childhood Emergency Service and the 116.000 hotline belonging to the Ministry of the Interior to deal with the phenomenon of missing minors as well as promotes emergency interventions in the event of calamities and disasters, projects for the children of prisoners, projects on the territory and prevention through education and awareness in schools, towards adults and towards those who decide.

Therefore, the support of the Foundation in the activities to protect minors who are victims of crimes relating to child pornography and in the framework of the development of synergistic actions aimed at implementing measures for the prevention and protection of minors from abuse and violence is of primary importance. For the State Police, this task is ensured by the National Center for the Fight against Child Pornography Online (CNCPO) and by the Postal and Communications Police Service which for years has been responsible for collecting all reports, also coming from foreign police bodies and from subjects public and private entities engaged in the fight against child pornography, monitoring the sites that disseminate material concerning the sexual exploitation of minors through the Internet.

This agreement represents a significant step in the process of constructing an effective collaboration between the public and private sectors as also hoped for by international directives: a project which, in consideration of the insidiousness of cyber threats and the rapid change of the relative forms, constitutes an essential tool for the creation of an effective system to combat online child pornography, based on the sharing of information and operational cooperation with the third sector, and, in particular, with a reliable partner with a long and recognized experience such as the SOS Il Telefono Azzurro Foundation.
