The monitoring of Viability Italia continues on the evolution of weather and circulation in relation to the snowfalls occurring in Abruzzo, Molise and in the hilly areas of Marche, Northern Apulia, Basilicata and Calabria.

During the night, snow fell also in the province of Frosinone, Caserta, Avellino and Salerno, without serious repercussions on traffic along the great road network.

Below is the updated list of traffic suspension measures for vehicles exceeding 7,5t:

  • in the province of Campobasso and Isernia on the entire road network excluding the motorway, until ceased requirements;
  • in the province of L'Aquila, Teramo, Pescara, Chieti up to ceased requirements, on the entire road and motorway network of competence, that is to say the Abruzzo sections of A24, A25 and A14;
  • in the province of Bari, Foggia, Brindisi, Lecce, Barletta-Andria-Trani, Taranto on all roads with the exception of the A14 motorway until ceased requirements;
  • in the province of Matera and Potenza on the entire road network, excluding the A2 motorway, until ceased requirements.

Commercial traffic management measures are under way, with temporary stops, redirects or storage areas in parking areas, pending the improvement of road access conditions.

FORECAST

For the day today snowfall will continue on Marche, Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia, up to sea level, with contributions to the soil from weak to moderate. Contributions are expected up to abundant between Abruzzo and Molise at hills and mountains. Snowfall at very low altitudes, locally up to sea level, also on the Tyrrhenian slopes of Sicily and southern Calabria, with altogether more abundant contributions to the hilly and mountainous parts of the aforementioned Sicilian sectors. From the early hours of today, Friday 4 January, there will also be snowfall on the eastern Campania, on the central-northern Basilicata and on the central-northern Ionian side of Calabria, at altitudes higher than 200-400 meters, with possible trespassing up to sea level , with weak contributions to the ground, moderate to hilly and mountainous levels.

The very low temperatures throughout Italy will lead to the formation of ground ice in the areas of Central-South affected by snowfall, frosts that especially at the hilly and mountainous levels will tend to persist even during the day.

On the day of 5 January are expected phenomena of a residual nature and in progressive depletion, on southern Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Campania hinterland and Tyrrhenian slopes of Sicily and southern Calabria, with temperatures still very cold in the morning low, rising slightly in the maximum diurnal, and still therefore risk of frosts spread on the areas affected by precipitation of the previous days.

Attention is drawn to those who will travel to evaluate the urgency and indifferency of planned journeys to the regions that will still be affected by widespread snowfalls, precede the beginning of the journey by a careful acquisition of information on transitability of the roads, they travel rested and maintaining prudent driving behavior, respecting the safety distance and with moderate speed. The vehicle must be efficient and equipped with non-slip means (on-board chains or mounted winter tires).
