Dr. Alessandro Zanasi, expert of the Sanpellegrino Observatory, recommends 2/3 liters of water per day to combat constipation

Summer and holidays are synonymous with long journeys, changes, heat and fluctuating eating habits. All these factors lead every year millions of Italians to have to face an annoying problem, the intestinal irregularity. It is especially women who suffer from it due to the frequent summer hormonal fluctuations that make this period even more tiring.

To combat the troubles related to constipation one of the fundamental allies is definitely hydration.

Several studies have shown that a greater consumption of water can help regulate the intestine. People who are healthy but with lower levels of hydration can, in fact, start to have problems with constipation more easily.

"To try to alleviate this problem certainly a valid help comes from the water." Explains Dr. Alessandro Zanasi, member of the S. Pellegrino Observatory and professor at the University of Bologna. “Adequate hydration, especially in the hottest periods, is one of the best solutions, not only to guarantee the well-being of the whole body, but also to help the intestine to perform its functions regularly. Water facilitates the stimulation of digestive processes thus increasing the speed of emptying the stomach and promoting intestinal transit. 2/3 liters of water per day can therefore help to counteract this annoying disturbance ".

Lockdown may also have contributed to the manifestation of certain intestinal disorders. Sitting for long hours, maintaining a sedentary lifestyle, together with stress and anxiety, can cause stool stasis and constipation.

Staying well hydrated, having a diet rich in fiber and combining a healthy lifestyle with good physical activity are important stimuli for the metabolism and fundamental aids to "get the waters moving again".
