Report: Russia has bought Google ads to distort US elections

According to the Washington Post, Google has uncovered evidence that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election by buying ads on its platforms. It appears that the ads were not bought by the same Moscow-related group that bought ads on Facebook, which could mean that the Russian effort to get involved in the election was wider than it was previously.

According to the Washington Post, Google last Monday revealed for the first time that Russia bought ads to influence the US Presidential Election of 2016 with the intention of facilitating Republican candidate Donald Trump. The report states that the Russians created ads on YouTube, Gmail, and other advertising platforms designed to help Trump.

The report states that the company that investigated the affair found that the ads were not bought by the Kremlin-associated group that bought ads on Facebook, which could indicate that the Russian effort to influence the election was more complex than estimated in. precedence. Washington Posto sources revealed that Google discovered tens of thousands of dollars were invested by Russian agents in ads designed to spread disinformation about the US presidential election.

Some of the ads, for a total cost of $ 100,000, included Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, and Jill Stein. Others, on the other hand, concerned American immigration policy, with the aim of favoring the division among the American people.

Google has deceived the problem of Russian agents by using their own platforms in the past. In September, Google spokesperson Andrea Faville told The Washington Post that the company "constantly checks to see if there is any abuse or violation of our policies." He added: "We have found no evidence that this type of advertising campaign has been run on our platforms."

However, the company launched an investigation after Congress asked the tech giant to see if the Russians used the various platforms to fight and influence the elections. While Google declined to comment on the issue, sources said the company is still trying to determine whether and who bought the ads were trolls or Russian government officials.
