Somalia: US embassy staff must leave Mogadishu

The US Embassy in Somalia has invited all non-essential staff members to leave Mogadishu, claiming they have received "specific threats" aimed at its employees.

A State Department statement announced that "due to information regarding a specific threat against US personnel at Mogadishu International Airport, the US mission in Somalia ordered non-essential employees with US citizenship to leave Mogadishu, until further notice ".

The story takes place in the aftermath of the first raids on Somali territory, conducted by the US against militants of the Islamic State, which allegedly caused the death of numerous terrorists on Saturday 4 November.

Although ISIS continues to recruit new members in the area, it still remains a modest opponent when compared to the Al-Shabaab group, which still dominates the area.Al-Shabaab aims to hunt down the armed international armed forces, overthrow the Somali government (backed by Western forces) and impose its integralist version of Islamic religion on the territory of the Horn of Africa.

The US engaged in fighting against al-Shabaab militants. Over 350 people were killed in the double bombing of Mogadishu in October by this group.

To date, the two Saturday November 4 air strikes are in size the biggest maneuver put in place by the US against ISIS in the Somali region.

Washington warned that the situation in Somalia is "extremely unstable" and the threat to US citizens remains "critical".

At the moment, no further details were provided.
