Terrorism: Putin telephones Trump to thank him for the collaboration

Putin telephoned Trump yesterday to thank him for the information that allowed to thwart a terrorist attack in Russia. White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told Reuters

No details were given, but Russia said it had thwarted the planned attacks in St. Petersburg thanks to a report from Washington.

Gidley said both presidents have pledged to continue anti-terrorist cooperation between the two countries.

"The presidents also discussed the state of relations between the United States and Russia and future efforts to support effective arms control." Trump could favor a new nuclear arms control deal.

Trump has suffered strong opposition in the recent past over ties to Russia from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, troubled by Putin's annexation of Crimea and Russian support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Some new tensions have arisen between the two countries.

Trump on Thursday warned Russia, Syria and Iran against killing civilians in the Syrian province of Idlib.

Syrian and Russian forces have stepped up their bombing of targets in Idlib, Syria's last rebel stronghold. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has promised to win it back.
