Turkey: Air raids in northern Iraq destroyed 4 PKK stations

Four positions by militiamen of the Kurdish workers' party (PKK) were neutralized by the Turkish aviation during some operations carried out in northern Iraq.

This was announced by Anadolu, the Turkish news agency, citing a statement published today by the Ankara General Staff, according to which the operations were conducted in the northern regions of the Iraqi Avasin, Basyan and Hakurk.

Last January 20 Turkey launched a massive military operation against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in the northwest Syrian canton of Afrin, Syria, announcing that the operations could also affect Manbij and the border of Iraq, a move that could potentially bring the Turkish forces to the clash with those of their NATO allies.

On January 26, Turkish President Erdogan, speaking of the “Olive Branch” operation, had promised that the activities would continue “until there are no more terrorists on the Iraqi border”.

The PKK, considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, resumed the armed struggle in 2015. Since then, thousands of people have died in clashes with Turkish forces, especially in the southern areas of the country. Since 1984, the deaths of this conflict have been over 40 thousand.
