Air Force aircraft transports newborn baby from Alghero to Rome

The baby, only four days old, was transported with a Falcon 50 of the 31st Wing of Ciampino

The emergency medical flight of a 4-day-old baby girl transported from Alghero to Rome with a Falcon 50 aircraft of the 31st Wing of the Air Force, based in Ciampino, was carried out yesterday evening.

The little girl, whose life was in danger, needed to be transported extremely urgently and promptly from the University Hospital of Sassari to the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome, to receive specific treatment.

The Falcon 50, which boarded the little girl at the Alghero-Fertilia airport, transported with the aid of a thermal cot, accompanied by her parents and assisted by a medical team, left around 19 pm reaching the Rome Ciampino airport after about an hour's flight. From here the little patient, waited on site by an ambulance, was able to quickly reach her destination hospital.

Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities that the Air Force carries out at the service of the community. The flight, defined as "IPV - Imminent Danger of Life", was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari at the Summit Situation Room of the Air Force Command, the operations room of the Air Force which has among its functions also that of arranging and manage this type of missions. The 31st Wing, one of the departments that carries out the operational readiness service for emergency medical transport, was therefore immediately affected.

The Air Force's flight departments are available to the population 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with vehicles and crews capable of ensuring the transport of patients, organs, medical teams and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions.

Hundreds of flight hours are carried out every year for this type of intervention, by the planes of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia.
