AIFA publishes the recommendations on the targeted therapy of resistant infections

Aimed at local and hospital medicine to promote optimal use of antibiotics

The Italian Medicines Agency publishes two documents on the institutional portal, aimed at hospital doctors ("Targeted therapy of infections caused by Gram negative bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics in hospitalized patients") and general practitioners ("Targeted therapy of urinary infections uncomplicated and complicated caused by Gram negative bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics for community medicine (including nursing homes)", with specific recommendations for more complex infections to be treated, caused by bacteria considered "critical" by the World Health Organization ( WHO), with minimal treatment options or no treatment options at all.

The recommendations were drawn up by the CTS AIFA-OPERA multidisciplinary working group (Optimization of Antibiotic Prescription), established in 2021 to support the Agency in promoting the optimal use of antibiotics.

Developed with a reasoned approach and based on the most recent scientific evidence, the Recommendations indicate the antibiotics to be preferred - differentiated into first, second choice and alternatives - and the most appropriate dosage and route of administration and with the lowest risk of bacterial selection resistant.

The aim is to preserve the effectiveness of both conventionally used antibiotics (approved before 2010) and more recently introduced molecules on the market and reduce the onset of resistance.
