OsMed 2019 national report on the use of drugs in Italy

The "Report 2019 on the use of drugs in Italy", produced by the AIFA National Observatory on the Use of Medicines (OsMed), was presented in live streaming on the YouTube channel of the Italian Medicines Agency. year in its twentieth edition.

The Report shows the national framework of pharmaceutical assistance in its entirety, provided both in the territorial and hospital settings, paid by the National Health Service (NHS) and through private purchase by the citizen.

"This is the Report that marks the twenty years of OsMed's activity and I present it with great pleasure", declared AIFA General Manager Nicola Magrini. “When it all started, the idea was to photograph public and private spending; subsequently efforts were made to assess whether the use of the available drugs was in line with the best evidence and over the years we have come to talk about rational, appropriate and optimal uses of the drugs ".

"Today the OsMed flows - continued Magrini - are able to provide useful data for the budget impact, for the trend of forecasts, for compliance with spending ceilings, for the good use of available resources, for the coverage capacity of the health system of the needs of citizens with respect to drugs ".

“The OsMed Report in these two decades has grown very well, going from 130 to 567 pages and providing increasingly accurate and updated data; now it is also interactive, according to the best paper short schools, and represents an extraordinary tool available to everyone, "concluded Magrini.

“Today's meeting is important - said the President of the AIFA Board of Directors Domenico Mantoan - because it reiterates the importance of the role of the Agency. A role, also cultural, of analysis and monitoring on the use and appropriateness of drugs, of support for political decisions and the Regions ".

"In 2019, total pharmaceutical expenditure was 30,8 billion euros, an increase of 5,8% compared to the previous year", explained Francesco Trotta, Director of the Office for monitoring pharmaceutical expenditure and relations with the Regions of the AIFA. "This increase - continued Trotta - is due to drugs purchased from public facilities (+ 18,3%) and to the private purchase of (class A: + 13,5%; class C: + 6,6%) ). The amount reimbursed by the National Health Service was 76,4% ”.

"From the point of view of consumption - concluded Trotta - the data show that each Italian took an average of 1,6 doses of the drug per day, for an average per capita cost of 510 euros (390 euros paid by the NHS)".
