OsMed 2020 National Report on the use of drugs in Italy

The 2020 National Report “The Use of Drugs in Italy” was presented, produced by the AIFA National Observatory on the use of Medicines (OsMed).

The Report, now in its twenty-first edition, provides an increasingly exhaustive and critical description of the national framework of pharmaceutical assistance in its entirety, provided both locally and in hospitals, at the expense of the National Health Service (NHS) and citizens. through private purchase.

The Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, opened the meeting: "With the pandemic season, drug policies have assumed a sensational centrality - he said - and it is time to have the ambition to make the necessary reforms, going beyond the model for spending silos and roofs. The work already started by AIFA must be part of this challenge with the awareness that the National Health Service is a decisive asset for the country ".

The General Manager Nicola Magrini reiterated AIFA's commitment to enhance data on drugs, announcing further projects: "We are working on the full realization of a national dataset, which aggregates regional databases in order to make interconnection between information possible. on drugs, hospitalizations and other health data ".

"In 2020, total pharmaceutical expenditure was 30,5 billion euros (-0,9%), of which 76,5% is reimbursed by the NHS - explained Francesco Trotta, manager of the HTA and Pharmaceutical Economics Sector - In average, for each citizen, the expenditure amounts to 512 euros (391,7 euros SSN expenditure). Just over 6 out of 10 citizens have received at least one prescription for drugs ”.

“From the data presented - concluded Giuseppe Traversa, manager of the Strategy and Drug Economics Area - pharmaceutical expenditure is well monitored and is under control. The international comparison also shows that Italy is among the fastest European countries for the arrival of drugs on the market and among the few to guarantee such a high number of active ingredients ".
